7 Great Grillhouses for Tsiknopempti
Who remembers that great scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding when Aunt Voula reacts in horror to the news that her niece’s non-Greek date doesn’t eat meat? (“What do you mean he don’t eat no meat? Oh, that’s okay. I make lamb.”) Well, the Greek culinary scene may have evolved a little since then, but meat is still king of the castle. Especially in the lead-up to Lent. Insider recommends 7 super-stylish and great-value grillhouses we know you’ll love!
Drakoulis Dry & Raw
Menu Hero: You’ll struggle to find a mediocre plate at this passion project of master butcher Stratos Drakoulis who set up an impressive wine cellar and chic dining space underneath his hip and happening meat boutique in the Voula high street. But prepare to fall hard for the carpaccio, the tomahawk aged rib, the deconstructed gyro or chorizo sausages.

Farma Bralou Steak Bar
Menu Hero: A new farm-to-fork set-up where you can savour expertly-aged cuts (some for as long as 120 days) of premium cattle like Greek Angus Purebred, Limousin and Charolais. Take your pick from their top-drawer carnivorous stash and have it expertly-cooked at more or less the same price as they sell it at their Bralou Farm butcher in the same street. Not a big fan of the red flesh? Bralou also serves “exotic” poultry such as pheasant, partridges and quails.
Milioni 12, Kolonaki, tel: +30 210.364.5050, www.farmabralou.gr
Menu Hero : Here’s your chance to depart from standard grillhouse fare at this attractive new-generation BBQ house in Northern Athens where Chef Vasilis Akrivos dazzles with more than just good steak. Case in point, the lamb liver with oregano or the delicious “makarounes” pasta with meat broth.

Moouu Quality Meats
Menu Hero: This classy and cosy meat-loving joint has gone down so well with southsiders since opening five or so years ago that they recently doubled in size – and now rock a jazzy cocktail annexe that’s one of Glyfada’s hottest haunts. Little wonder with such menu hits as falling off the bone spare ribs and impeccably-cooked Oyster Blade or Hanging Tender cuts served with dreamy-creamy sweeps of mash.

Base Grill Athens
Menu Hero: Base Grill’s famous black pork and beef sausages (the black pig is bred on a small farm – the only certified black pig breeder in Greece) and the enormous Picanha rump cap cut which can feed a whole family!
Konstantinopoleos Avenue 64 & Ammohostou, Peristeri, tel: +30 210.575.7455, www.basegrillathens.gr
Telemachos Art Grill
Menu Hero: George and Kostas Tsilingiris’s updated meat-focused venture in Kifisia is a sophisticated grill house with an urban aesthetic (and a kick-ass wine cellar at the back!). We recommend the hillbilly goat in a pot with linguini and the lamb carpaccio.
Fragkopoulou 22, Kifisia, Tel : +30 210.807.4015, www.telemachoskifisia.gr
Menu Hero: Short rib steak, truffle fries and oh-so-juicy mini-burgers rule at this ever-popular and easy-going downtown eaterie. You’re welcome!
