Raiment of the Soul at the Acropolis Museum

Raiment of the Soul at the Acropolis Museum

What: Acclaimed photographer Vangelis Kyris collaborates with master embroidery artist Anatoli Georgiev to showcase the wealth of Greece’s sartorial traditions. Kyris’ portraits of contemporary Athenians wearing historic garments were then printed on fabric, with Georgiev bringing the 128 costumes alive with his extraordinary needlework.

As part of the  part of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece organized a fashion show with 128 traditional costumes of great historical significance that were donned for the first time after almost 200 years. Most of the costumes traced back to historical figures from the Greek Independence movement, and were drawn from all over Greece, each with their own distinct brand of embroidery and local motifs. Photographer Vangelis Kyris shot Athenian models wearing these historic garments, capturing the timeless sensuality of the costumes. The photographs were then meticulously printed on fabric, with Anatoli Georgiev bringing these costumes alive with his exquisite embroidery.
